Davao Has the Best Durian in the World!

Love it or hate it, Durian has earned its place as the king of fruits. But if you think you’ve tasted it all, wait until you try Davao’s version, where this fruit reaches a whole new level of deliciousness! As a die-hard Durian lover, I recently had the opportunity to explore Davao City during the Kadayawan Festival. This festival is a celebration of the city’s bountiful harvests, including its world-famous ‘King of Fruits’.

A Massive Durian Party

During my stay in Davao, I was fortunate enough to be invited to a big Durian Party! The generous owners of the sprawling Belviz Farms hosted a grand Buffet at one of the biggest malls in town! They welcomed me to sit with the locals to enjoy all varieties of the King of Fruits for free!

During the event, I discovered that Davao’s Durian outshines those from other countries in several ways, making it a must-try for any fruit enthusiast just like me. Ever wondered what makes it so special? Let me take you through the juicy details! Here’s why I think Durian in Davao is the best in the world!

What Makes Davao ‘King of Fruits’ Special?

1. Superior Taste and Texture

Imagine sinking your teeth into velvety Durian flesh—rich, creamy, and bursting with layers of flavor from sweet to slightly bitter. This balance is something that fruit lovers find irresistible. Unlike some varieties from other countries that can be overly sweet.

2. Super Cheap

One of the most appealing aspects of Davao’s King of Fruits is its affordability. While Durian can be quite expensive in other parts of Southeast Asia, in Davao City, the prices are significantly lower. During the harvest season, you can buy the fruit for 30 Philippine Peso (0.54 US Dollar) a kilo. It’s insanely cheap! You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars for a Durian Buffet, with just a couple of bucks, you can have an all-you-can-eat Durian paradise. Truly, the affordability is unmatched.

3. Variety and Availability

Davao City offers a wide variety of Durian, including popular types like Mamer, Arancillo, Puyat, Mon Thong and Chanee. This variety allows consumers to choose according to their taste preferences, whether they prefer a sweeter, creamier fruit or one with a stronger, more pungent aroma. Furthermore, Durian is available almost year-round in the city, making it easy to enjoy this delicacy whenever you visit.

Where to Find the Best Durian in Davao City

Now that you know why Davao’s Durian is a must-try, let me give you the inside scoop on where to find the best of the best. Here are the secret spots that I discovered during my stay in Davao City:

1.    Fruit Vendors Association, Magsaysay Park

Perhaps the most well-known place to find high-quality Durian in the city is the famous Fruit Vendors Association in Magsaysay Park near the China Town. To go there, you can hop in a cab, or if you’re feeling adventurous, take a jeepney ride for a real Davao experience. There, you will see a long fruit stand featuring the famous varieties of Durian. You can enjoy your purchased fruits there since they also provide tables and utensils for dine-in customers.

2.    Bangkerohan Public Market

The greatest treasures are hidden in the toughest neighborhoods. I’m telling you, Bangkerohan Public Market is not for the weak. It’s a big rowdy place full of vendors of fish, veggies, fruits, meat, and alike. But the fruit from this place is like no other. Bangkerohan holds the title for “the cheapest Durian in the world”. Wanting to enjoy lots of healthy fruit in a budget? Bangkerohan is the place for you!

3.    Agdao Farmers’ Market

If you are into a fancier place, you can also score top-quality Durian if you go to the modern Agdao Farmers’ Market. This market is the most unique market in Davao. It has elevators and escalators but sells goods similar to those in Bangkerohan Public Market. Note that this place might be a little bit pricier compared to Bangkerohan (though it’s still affordable), but the fruit quality there is also top tier! Some of my friends loved this place and recommended it to me before I had my Davao experience.

Take Note of these Esquire Tips

1.    Use Plastic Container

Most of the hotels and apartments around town usually forbid residents from consuming the fruit at the facilities because of the strong aroma. To solve this, buy a plastic container from Convenience Stores, Seven Eleven, and other mini marts around the city. Before returning to your apartment or hotel, you can pack your bought fruit using these plastic containers. This way, you can enjoy your delicious durian in your own private space!

2.    Ask Reliable Locals

Want to pick the best durian for your buck? A tip that I discovered is asking locals about which one should you buy or avoid. I made some friends during my stay in Davao, so I asked them about tips such as the ideal prices, the taste of the varieties that I haven’t tried, and many more. Find a reliable local and enjoy experience to the fullest!

3.    Use the Durian Compass

Believe it or not, the position of the stem can actually indicate the ripeness of a durian. Ripe durians will have a stem that points upwards, while underripe ones will have a stem pointing down. So, next time that you are craving for a perfect durian, use this “durian compass” to find the perfect fruit every time.

A Durian Experience Like No Other

Davao City’s Durian is more than just a fruit; it’s a testament to the region’s rich natural resources, agricultural expertise, and cultural pride. Whether you’re a seasoned ‘King of Fruits’ enjoyer or a curious first-timer, trying Davao’s local Durian is an experience not to be missed. With its superior taste, consistent quality, and deep cultural significance, Davao’s Durian undoubtedly outshines its counterparts in other countries, making it a true gem of the Philippines.

So, if you ever find yourself in Davao City, especially during the vibrant Kadayawan Festival, make sure to indulge in this unique culinary experience. As the Esquire, I can confidently say that Davao’s Durian is the best in the world.
