Top 9 Things to Do in Davao City, Philippines

I have traveled all across Southeast Asia in the past few years. I’ve experienced diverse cultures, different traditions, and various types of locals. If there’s one place that has truly captured my attention, it’s Davao City, Philippines. And so, I decided to explore the exotic city of Davao for the first time.

Visiting for the first time during the vibrant Kadayawan Festival, I was blown away by the city’s unique blend of culture, nature, and modern comforts. This blog is a product of my Davao experiences and my research about the paradise. Here’s my list of the top 9 things you absolutely must do when you find yourself in this incredible city.

1. Explore the Paradise Island of Samal

Just a short boat ride away from Davao City, Samal Island is a slice of paradise. I spent an entire day hopping between pristine beaches, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and lounging under the sun.

If you’re into water activities, try snorkeling or diving—the marine life is spectacular! If you are into exploring caves, waterfalls, and rainforests, Samal Island is the place for you!

2. Buda Highlands: Cooldown and Relax in Davao City

Sometimes, Davao’s heat can be intense, so a trip to Buda, Davao is a refreshing escape. This highland area is dotted with quaint mountain resorts and picturesque views that reminded me of Baguio (another city in the Philippines). I loved hiking through the lush trails and even visited a few local resorts and experience a relaxing rest like I never had. The view there is also breathtaking and relaxing at the same time!

3. Discover Nature and Adventure at Eden Nature Park, Toril Davao City

Eden Nature Park in Toril offers a perfect mix of nature and adventure. From ziplines to fishing, there’s something for everyone. I spent a few hours walking through the beautiful gardens. If you are into cool temperatures, Eden Nature Park is also a place to go.

Don’t miss the chance to try their famous tilapia dishes—it’s a culinary experience you won’t forget. To top in all off, they also serve fresh Vegan food for our vegan friends out there!

4. Shop ‘Til You Drop at Davao’s Malls

Davao’s shopping malls are more than just places to shop—they’re cultural hubs where you can experience the city’s modern side. I spent hours exploring Abreeza Mall and Gaisano Mall in the Bajada area, SM Lanang around the Lanang area, and SM Ecoland near the Ecoland Area. The malls are also a great place to cool down and people-watch after a long day of sightseeing. Shopping with Davao malls is also convenient and practical with a sprinkle of the city’s culture and modernity.

5. Take a Scenic Drive to Calinan

Calinan is a hidden gem on the outskirts of Davao. Known for its durian farms, I had the chance to visit a few and taste the “king of fruits” right where it’s grown. The scenic drive through this rural area, with its rolling hills and lush greenery, was a peaceful contrast to the bustling city center. It also offers various fruits like mangosteen, rambutan, lanzones, native mangos, and many more. The bonus is that they sell these goods at a very cheap price!

6. Experience the Vibrancy of Kadayawan Festival

Being in Davao during the Kadayawan Festival was pure serendipity. The city comes alive with colorful parades, street dances, and cultural performances celebrating Davao’s rich heritage. I was mesmerized by the beauty of the floral floats and the energy of the participants. I had the chance to attend an all-you-can-eat durian buffet, I interviewed some of the local tribes, and had the chance to meet amazing people along the way. It’s a celebration that truly showcases the spirit of the Davaoeños.

7. Stay Fit at Davao’s Top Gyms

Even while traveling, I love to keep up with my fitness routine. Davao has some excellent gyms, and I found a great spot where I could work out during my stay. The facilities were top-notch, and the staff was incredibly friendly. Plus, working out was a great way to balance all the delicious food I was indulging in! Some of the notable gyms are the BeeFit gyms around town, the Elevation Fitness Gyms, and the Dstar Fitness gyms. These gyms are on par with the international gyms that I used to go to.

8. Sip Coffee at Obrero’s Cozy Coffee Shops

As an avid fan of coffee, I had the chance to explore the Obrero area, the coffee shop capital of Davao City. The area is filled with unique and vibrant coffee shops depending on your mood. I tried a few different cafes, and each had its own charms. My go-to coffee shops for work are the Green Coffee Cafes and the Palpitate Coffee. Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or just looking for a quiet spot to relax, Obrero won’t disappoint.

9. Hike the Majestic Mount Apo

They say that no trip to Davao is complete without tackling the highest peak in the Philippines—Mount Apo. As an avid hiker, this was one of the prior plans of my trip. The challenging trek is rewarded with breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and the thrill of conquering the king of Philippine mountains. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but the experience is worth every step. Make sure to plan well and go with an experienced guide!
